Pleven, Bulgaria, 1 June 2026 – Medical University – Pleven has been officially registered as an outpatient healthcare facility authorized to provide services in medical genetics, general and clinical pathology, and clinical microbiology. This new status enables the University to carry out diagnostic and healthcare activities that support the practical training of students and PhD candidates in medicine, dental medicine, and pharmacy, as well as postgraduate education for physicians and dental practitioners. These activities will be closely integrated with scientific research and the implementation of advanced diagnostic approaches in the fields of medical genetics, pathology, and clinical microbiology.
The registration also represents an important milestone in the development of the Leonardo da Vinci Centre of Competence, where Medical University – Pleven serves as the lead partner. Part of the Centre’s infrastructure and high-tech equipment will support the diagnostic, research, and educational activities of the newly registered healthcare facility.
Prof. Savelina Popovska, Head of the Department of Pathology at Medical University – Pleven and Lead of the Precision Medicine Division at the Leonardo da Vinci Centre of Competence, commented:
“The newly registered facility will implement advanced genomic technologies for precision diagnostics and personalized medicine. A key focus of our work will be molecular diagnostics and genomic profiling of cancer patients, including breast, ovarian, colorectal, and lung cancers, melanoma, and other solid tumors. These capabilities will support the selection of targeted therapies and enable a more personalized approach to patient care.
We will also provide highly specialized diagnostics for hereditary and rare genetic disorders, as well as analyses of inherited predispositions to cancer and other multifactorial diseases. In partnership with a specialized medical genetics practice, we will offer genetic counseling, expert interpretation of results, and recommendations for the monitoring and management of patients and their families.”
The primary activities will be conducted at the Medical University – Pleven campus located at 1 Kliment Ohridski Street, where the specialties of Medical Genetics and General and Clinical Pathology are registered. The Second Clinical Base “Prof. Dr. Minyo Ganchev” has been registered as a branch facility and will host activities in the field of Clinical Microbiology.
With the acquisition of this registration, Medical University – Pleven and the Leonardo da Vinci Centre of Competence are expanding their capacity to integrate education, healthcare delivery, and scientific research, further strengthening their position as a leading academic and biomedical research hub in Bulgaria.
